A typical neglected pond is an oasis for the Coots.
We have had many inquires regarding Coots this season. Coots thrive on poor and low water conditions. We are entering our 3rd year of drought in California and this is contributing to the issue. They are obnoxiously persistent, with greatly increasing numbers. They will run and swim away from you or anything that they perceive as a threat, hiding in the reeds and brush. Additionally, they can become quite aggressive at times. They have been known to attack both people and dogs in defense of nests and young. To achieve any success in Coot control, takes a comprehensive, methodical approach. It starts with pond, lake and shoreline clean up and maintenance, followed by K-9 nest discovery, removal, and harassment.
Healthy ponds and lakes are not achieved by accident. They are achieved through a combination of proper design and proper maintenance. By design, to dissuade birds from staying, and by maintenance to remove hiding and nesting areas and overgrown or inappropriate vegetation, that both hide and provide the birds with food. And lastly, you can not ignore the water treatment issues.
So making the necessary changes to reduce or eliminate your waterfowl issues is an investment in the future. It is a far more pleasant task to be pro-active and take steps to eliminate the problem, than to just be re-active and deal with messy results. The cost and health hazard resulting from waterfowl infestation, will only continue to rise as their numbers increase, which is only a question of time. Their numbers can increase at an alarming rate.

Two examples of design and maintenance working well together. The above example has a stronger design, requiring lower maintenance, whereas the lower example has a weaker design, requiring higher maintenance. However, each shows well and is in great condition.
