Pond & Lake Maintenance

Pond and lake maintenance is a huge category that encompasses many complex issues. It is most often beyond the “layman” to assess it all. Certainly, you can determine if you think the vegetation is taking over and needs to be trimmed or even removed, but are you aware of all of the related issues. Even the removal of some vegetation can itself cause changes that can plunge your water into “balance” failure. There are so many influencing aspects that it really takes a fair amount of chemistry knowledge to understand the complex interactive “ecosystem” operation. And some issues are predecessors for others, needing to be dealt with first and foremost. All of the factors that contribute to the equation are variables. Surface area, depth of water, aeration, circulation, PH, alkalinity, debris content, fertilization runoff, amount of sunlight, presence of waterfowl, etc., etc..

The old saying…”A little knowledge can be dangerous” certainly applies here. With the explosion of the internet, we have seen the proliferation of chemicals that were previously only available to established licensed contractors and sub-contractors. But now, you can have these products shipped right to your door. These vendors have no vested interest in anything but selling you the product. And then another one when that one didn’t do the job, and so on, and so on. All the while, you’re making a bad situation worse.

The new end user reads the label and thinks he has it all figured out. But with the introduction of each chemical, while it may, and only may, perform as you expect, the ramifications to the other aspects of the aqua environment can be devastating. Additionally, there are definitely things that need to be determined and addressed before any chemicals are added whatsoever.

A good portion of the products available are just designed to mask the problem instead of addressing the underlying causes. Water Dyes are a perfect example. Here is a product designed to make the water an attractive color. But if your water is an unattractive color, it’s for a reason. Waterborne sediment, called Turbidity, is one likely cause. But then what is responsible for the Turbidity? The list of potential causes is long and complex, but using dyes to mask the problem is like putting on alot of makeup to hide a bad complexion. The best thing to do is to clear up the problem, then there will be nothing to hide.

Many new pond and lake owners or caretakers are not even aware that their bodies of water need any looking after at all. It is entirely feasible that a new pond or lake can go 2 to 3 years without significant issues.
Then, slowly, issues start cropping up. You begin to see algae growing more and more, some even floating on the surface. The water becomes cloudy after a storm, but doesn’t seem to clear up even days after the storm has passed. Mysteriously, you find a few dead fish every morning, on the shores of your larger lakes. Or worse yet, you used to see live fish, but you don’t any more.

The larger and deeper the body of water, the longer it can exist on its own. But without exception, the time will come when, without active “maintenance” things will cascade out of control. Experience has taught us that addressing these issues before the crisis stage is your best opportunity for affordable stability.
